The Upper Room Mission operates a number of programs that address the needs of the less fortunate. We provide meals and clothes for the homeless as well as spiritual guidance, comfort and counselling. Meals are served 5 days of the week; clothing and goods are provided free to anyone as the need arises.

Meals

Breakfast is served from 7:30am till 9am, most of our guests make a beeline for the coffee pot; a plate of toast, eggs, cereal or muffins, there’s plenty to offer. A hot lunch is served up at noon, sometimes standing room only! To round out the day, Supper is served from 4pm till 5pm.

Virtually all the food we serve has been donated though from time to time we purchase staples like milk or sugar. It is through the outstanding generosity of Coopers Foods, Save-On-Foods, and Buy-Low Foods, that many of our guests receive their daily meals.

There are two kitchen staff members and as many as seven volunteers that come in daily to assist with food preparation, serving and cleanup.

Chapel Back to Top

The upstairs chapel is the "Upper Room" and is the heart of the mission. It is our deepest desire that our guests will come to Christ through the chapel service and experience life change.

Chapel is led by various Pastors in town, and volunteers as far away as Enderby, and lasts 30 minutes. Some hold a traditional worship service with hymns, prayer, scripture and a message. Others lead the group in praise music. It is a true time of blessing and peace for our guests and staff in attendance.

Store Back to Top

Hours: Mon - Fri from 10:00 Am to 4:00 PM / Sat from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

If you visit our Thrift Store you will be hard pressed to leave without buying something… We’ve got an amazing selection, so you’re bound to find something you’ll love at a price you can afford! Whether its clothes like new, shoes for school, curtains for the spare bedroom, quilting material, dishes for the cabin or a bag of screws; there is something here for everyone. One of our paintings might just be the next Antique Road Show treasure!

The sorting process makes sure that only the best items are available in the store. All electrical items are tested and marked as "working" before they’re put into the store. Stock turns over daily so come by often to see what’s available. You definitely don’t want to miss our monthly half price sale!!!

Outreach Services Back to Top

Our Outreach Workers, Bev Henke and Judy Trouiller, BSW, provide support services such as advocacy, counselling and assistance with linking individuals up with appropriate services. (addictions treatment; employment services, etc).

Counselling services are available to anyone experiencing life transitions, difficult relationships, loss and grief, isolation, anger management, stress/coping, self-esteem, assertiveness, spiritual issues, or unemployment.

Sorting Back to Top

All donated goods are sorted and then routed to the appropriate area of the Mission.

Clothing and cloth goods go directly to the basement where they are examined for cleanliness and wear. Typically, soiled clothes are discarded. Clothing that is like new is priced and either put in the store, or stored for the appropriate season. If there are items that are requested for our clothing giveaway room, they are set aside. If the garment has seen some wear but is in good shape, it is bagged and shipped to a redistribution center in Surrey, BC. At the center, it is sorted again and ends up going overseas to Russia, Afghanistan or another 3rd world country. Cotton clothing that is not fit for reuse is stripped of buttons, zippers and seams and sold for rags.

Pencils, crayons, pens and small toys are tested and cleaned up and generally packaged for distribution to 3rd world countries for individuals leaving on missions trips.

Cotton clothing that is not fit for reuse is stripped of buttons, zippers and seams and sold for rags. Other clothing is has no further use and is discarded.

Household items are examined for cleanliness and quality. Those that are deemed fit for re-use are priced and placed in the store. All electrical items are tested before they are sold. Hard cover books are either shelved for sale if space allows, otherwise they are distributed to senior centers along with paperbacks.

Furniture is examined for damage and marked for sale if possible. Matresses must be verl clean, almost like new. Hide-a-beds are not accepted. They are not in high demand, they take up a lot of space and are expensive to discard. Everything that cannot be re-sold goes into the dumpster. Trash removal is one of the highest costs of our operation.

Christmas decorations are cleaned up and shelved until November, when the store is transformed for Christmas. Lights, trees and ornaments, figurines and candles are sold in large numbers during the holiday season.

Administration Back to Top

Keeping the Mission operating is more than a full time job. Organizing all the programs, the kitchen and store as well as coordination the efforts of over 100 volunteers takes a special combination of caring and leadership.
